The Problem of Teens and Smoking

The problem of teens and smoking began decades ago when smoking was considered to be a sign of rebellion. Back then, most did not know that smoking cigarettes was detrimental to their health. Now, the truth about smoking is well-documented. There are even warnings printed on cigarette packs. However, one thing has not changed. Teens are still lighting up.

Although there are statements on cigarette packs that indicate the dangers of smoking cigarettes, the sad fact of the matter is that the problem of teens and smoking stems from the tobacco companies themselves. They are marketing cigarettes to teenagers through the use of designer packaging, humorous characters and attractive models.

The Problem of Teens and Smoking: Health and Legal Issues
Numerous studies have shown that smoking causes emphysema, lung cancer, high blood pressure, blood clots, heart disease and cancers of the throat, esophagus and stomach. When a teenager smokes, he or she is causing horrific harm to his or her body before reaching adulthood.

Most teenagers begin smoking because they are convinced it is "cool". Unfortunately, the teenage brain is also more prone to addiction. After smoking a couple of packs of cigarettes, many teens become hooked and by the time they seriously consider quitting, they have a serious challenge to overcome.

A side problem of teens and smoking concerns breaking the law to buy cigarettes. When a child under the age of 18 buys cigarettes, they are committing a crime and the person selling to them is committing a crime as well. Most teens who smoke find an adult to buy for them. This practice is also illegal. Adults should not buy cigarettes for teenagers. They are the role models and should not be contributing to a teen's addiction or in breaking the law.

The biggest problem of teens and smoking is that teens become smoking adults and are at an increased risk of premature death.

The Problem of Teens and Smoking: There is Help Available
It is easy to tell someone he or she should stop smoking. It is not such an easy thing to accomplish. However, there are things that can be done to make the quitting process easier. A major part of the smoking addiction is in the habit. Smokers get used to smoking. Going "cold turkey" may work for some, but most require a different method of quitting. A smoking cessation program is highly recommended for any smoker, including teenagers.
