SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT WITH ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES

If saving yourself isn’t enough incentive to curb your smoking habit then why not save the environment with electronic cigarettes. I participate in a lot of volunteer work cleaning up trails and clearing out invasive species. On the occasion we take a break I am surprised at how many people light up a cigarette. I’m even more surprised and almost frighted when I see someone throw it on the ground. Are you kidding me? Are we not here trying to help save the environment?

The best part is you don’t need to spend four hours of your day hacking down a foreign plant species that’s putting a stranglehold on the local fauna. The only thing you need to do is better yourself. Start on the road to recovery, a road leading you away from such a awful and disgusting habit and on to a cleaner healthier lifestyle.

So how can you save the environment with electronic cigarettes you might ask. First, electronic cigarettes are smokeless in a sense. That’s right, they produce no smoke but rather a harmless water vapor. This means no toxic chemicals are being emitted into the atmosphere. This is beneficial not only to the environment but to the user and the general public as well. It also means you can use them essentially anywhere because the electronic cigarette leaves no odor. In addition, because there is no tobacco involved they can not be banned like traditional cigarettes.

The second way you can help save the environment with electronic cigarettes is by eliminating cigarette butts. You see them everywhere, on the street, in the gutters and even in the water. There’s nothing more disconcerting to a peaceful walk along a beach front to come upon a cigarette butt washing ashore.

The biggest myth is that these cigarette butts are harmless and biodegradable. They are not, the filters used in cigarettes are made of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that persists in the environment and can take many years to decompose. These are the same filters that are designed to trap the toxins from the smoke before entering your lungs. Instead these toxins end up in the aquatic ecosystem threatening the water quality and existence of many life forms. So next time you light up a cigarette think twice, once about saving yourself, and once about saving the environment.
