Smoking Health Risks To A Baby

There are many smoking health risks to the unborn and recently born baby. A baby that is born to a mother who smokes faces many more health problems than a child born to a mother who does not smoke. Two categories of smoking health risks to a newborn baby are physical and mental.

There are many physical smoking health risks to the unborn baby. The first smoking health risk is death, which can be from a miscarriage or a stillbirth. If the baby does survive, then he or she may be delivered early (preterm).

Preterm delivery is a smoking health risk, which has many risks in itself. For instance, a baby that is born early could have the following problems: low birth weight and underdeveloped lungs. Furthermore, even the baby that survives all of this is not out of danger from a smoking health risk. He or she still has to be able to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Another smoking health risk to the newborn baby is being breast-fed. When the mother breast-feeds her son or daughter, the chemicals are entering the child’s body. The effects of smoking on breast-feeding are many. These smoking health risks including restlessness, a rapid heartbeat, vomiting, shorter sleep times, or diarrhea, which can cause dehydration resulting in death if left untreated.

In addition to the physical smoking health risks, there are mental smoking health risks as well. The main mental risk is the tendency for the baby that has been exposed to smoke to learn at a slower rate than children who have not been exposed to smoke. When learning occurs at a slower rate, then the child is less likely to learn as much as others. Finally, the child whose parents smoke may get it in his or her mind that it is all right to smoke, which repeats this cycle of smoking health risks.
